"I must confess that I am completely embarrassed to be writing this story since I am guilty of inadequate pre-flight planning. However, just like 'Never Again' articles I would like others to learn from my mistake.
I have owned several Lightspeed XL model headsets but recently decided it was time for an upgrade. I purchased a very expensive headset from another manufacturer who has a very distinuished reputation for high quality audio systems. The ANR capabilities of their headset was very acceptable, however I immediately noticed that the unit did not have a cell phone/entertainment jack installed. I just assumed that the company would be on the leading edge of technology. I was completely dismayed to find that it had neither an aux-in or Bluetooth technology.
I called the company to get a return authorization. Although they allowed the return, I was told that I was the only one that had ever complained about not being able to use the cell phone while on the ramp or listen to my ipod while airborne. I was also assured that there were after market products that could be used... read that to be an additional $175.00 and an extra set of wires cluttering up the cockpit.
I took another look at the Lightspeed Zulu... what a difference.
What I got with the Zulu was high quality construction, aux-in jack, Bluetooth, and exceptional ANR capibilities. To top it all off! -- $150.00 less expensive than the other brand without considering the additional $175.00 to add cell phone or entertainment capailities. Would you believe the other manufacturer didn't even include a storage case or bag?
Needless to say Lightspeed is now my sole-source provider for headsets. There really is no reason to look any further. The other company should stick with wave guide technology for the home and leave aviation headset manufacturing to the aviation experts."
